About
The Solar Planning UK project is an UKRI / ESRC funded scientific project with the aim to better understand policy planning processes for ground mounted solar photovoltaic farms at local authority level. We are an interdisciplinary team of political scientists, anthropologist, and geographers at the University of Aberdeen collaborating to study 1) under what circumstances ground mounted photovoltaic solar farms are approved (including socio-economic, spatial, and other contextual factors), 2) to investigate the role of stakeholder networks in the planning process, and 3) to understand public opinion and views towards solar farms and peoples’ attachments to their local areas.

Dr David Toke,
Principal Investigator
David is Reader in Politics at the University of Aberdeen. His expertise is in renewable energy projects and policy planning. David leads on WP2 (Policy Planning).
Dr Kathrin Thomas,
Co-Investigator
Kathrin is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Aberdeen. Her background is in comparative public opinion research and research methods. Kathrin leads on WP3 (Survey).
Dr Jo Vergunst,
Co-Investigator
Jo is Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. His research is about people’s relationships with their environments. Jo leads on WP4 (Ethnography).
Dr Paula Duffy,
Co-Investigator
Paula is Lecturer in Geography and Environment at the University of Aberdeen. Her areas of expertise are Human geography and demography and renewable energy. Paula leads on WP1 (Spatial Analysis).
Dr Mohsin Hussain,
Talented Postdoc
Mohsin is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Politics at the University of Aberdeen. His research is in the areas of human rights, environmental politics and mixed-methods. Moshin contributes to the success of all WPs.
Dr Costanza Concetti,
Talented Postdoc
Costanza is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Politics at the University of Aberdeen. Her background is energy policy planning and the future of the energy system. Costanza contributes to the success of all WPs.
